I didn’t like it when grownups laughed at me. Now I’m the grown up!

Anika:”I stapled my finger yesterday.”
Me: “Ha ha ha ha ha ha!”
Anika:”Why is it so funny? It really hurt.”
Me:”Okay, I’m sorry. I know it wasn’t ffunny. But…. Bah ha ha ha ha! Okay, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t laugh.”
Anika:”I stapled my finger and then it really hurt, and then I was playing with glue at school, and then glue got in it. Why is it so funny? It’s not funny.”
Me:”It’ll be funny in hindsight.”
Anika:”What’s ‘hindsight’?”
Me:”It means that when something happens that doesn’t feel good when it happens, later on in life when you think about it, it seems funny.”
Anika:”Oh, like when I banged my head against the wall? That seems funny now.”
Me:”And so will your stapling your finger. If it only happened yesterday, maybe it’s too soon to think it’s funny. Give it a few weeks.”
Anika:”Maybe a few years!”
